Two Eids, not one

There are two Eids each year. They are not the same. The first is Eid al-Fitr. The second is Eid al-Adha. They happen months apart. They celebrate different things. Both share the word Eid.

Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr comes right after Ramadan. It celebrates the end of the fast. Muslims give a little charity first. This happens before the Eid prayer. Then everyone can join in. Nobody is left out.

Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha comes later in the year. It comes about two months after. It remembers Ibrahim. He was willing to obey Allah. This was hard for him. It happens near the time of Hajj.

What happens on Eid day

Muslims wake early on both Eids. They wear new or best clothes. They pray a special Eid prayer. Often this happens outdoors. Or it happens in a large hall. Afterwards, families visit each other. Children often get gifts. Sometimes they get money too.

One Eid, worked through

It is Eid al-Fitr morning. The sun has just risen. A family wakes up early. They put on new clothes. They go to the Eid prayer. It is held in an open space. Afterwards, they visit grandparents. They share food and stories. The children get eidiyyah. This is a small gift of money. The day is about gratitude. The fast of Ramadan is now complete.
