Writing a simple label or caption

English · Early Years · The School

Sound it out, write it down

Say the word slowly. "Ssss…uuuu…nnnn." Sun. What is the first sound? Write a letter for it. What is the next sound? Write a letter for that too. You are turning sounds you hear into letters you can see. Do this one sound at a time. Do not try to remember the whole word at once.

A label names a picture

Draw a picture. Then write a word next to it that says what it is. Draw a sun. Write SUN next to it. That word is called a LABEL. It tells anyone looking at your picture exactly what it is. Try labelling more than one thing in a picture. A cat. A house. A tree. Each gets its own label.

It does not have to be perfect yet

You might write "SN" instead of "SUN". That is not wrong. It shows you heard the "s" sound and the "n" sound, which is exactly right. This is called having a go. It is how every writer starts. Even grown-ups sometimes are not sure how to spell a tricky word. They still write it down and check later.

Draw a big yellow sun. Say the word slowly: s…u…n. First sound: s. Write the letter s. Next sound: u. Write the letter u. Last sound: n. Write the letter n. Now look at your label: S-U-N. You wrote a whole word, one sound at a time.
