Plant or animal: where food starts

Design & Technology · Key Stage 1 · The School

Every food has a real start

All food comes from somewhere real, not from a shop shelf. It comes from a PLANT or an ANIMAL. Bread starts as wheat, a plant, growing in a field. Milk starts inside a cow, an animal. The shop is only where you find it, near the end of its journey.

Foods from plants

An apple grows on a tree. A carrot grows underground. Rice grows in wet fields. Bread comes from wheat, ground into flour. All of these start as a plant, growing somewhere real, long before they reach your plate. Plants feed a lot of us.

Foods from animals

Milk comes from a cow, or a goat. Eggs come from a hen. Cheese is made from milk too. Fish comes from a river or the sea. All of these start as an animal, or from what an animal produces.

Tracing five foods to their real start

Sort five foods back to where they really started. A slice of bread: wheat, growing as a plant in a field. A glass of milk: a cow, an animal. An apple: a tree, a plant. A boiled egg: a hen, an animal. A bowl of rice: a rice plant, growing in wet fields. None of these five started in a shop. Every single one started as a real, living plant or a real, living animal, somewhere in the world, before any shop was even involved.

Looking at your own plate

Next time you eat, pick one food on your plate. Ask where it really started. A plant, growing somewhere? An animal, somewhere real? Every food has a true story before the shop, and now you know how to find it.
