Beyond naming the festival
نَحْتَفِلُ بِالعيدِ — we celebrate Eid. This names a festival. It earns little alone. نَحْتَفِلُ بِعيدِ الفِطْرِ بَعْدَ شَهْرِ رَمَضان، وَنَلْبَسُ مَلابِسَ جَديدَةً وَنَزورُ العائِلَة — we celebrate Eid al-Fitr after the month of Ramadan, and we wear new clothes and visit family. Describing WHAT HAPPENS turns a name into a fuller answer.
A tradition and its meaning
العيدِيَّةُ عادَةٌ حَيْثُ يُعْطي الكِبارُ نُقودًا لِلصِّغار — eidiyyah is a custom where adults give money to children. Naming the custom, then explaining what it involves, is exactly the two-part move this topic rewards: the word, then the explanation.
Why a custom matters
هَذِهِ العادَةُ مُهِمَّةٌ لِأَنَّها تُقَرِّبُ العائِلَة — this custom is important because it brings the family closer. Adding WHY a tradition matters, not just what it is, is the same opinion-with-reason move used across every GCSE speaking topic, applied here to culture rather than to a person or a place.
Comparing customs
في بَلَدي، نَحْتَفِلُ بِالعيدِ بِطَريقَةٍ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ عَنْ بَلَدٍ آخَر — in my country, we celebrate Eid in a way different from another country. تَخْتَلِفُ العاداتُ مِنْ عائِلَةٍ إِلى عائِلَة — customs differ from family to family. Naming a DIFFERENCE, even a small one, shows the cultural awareness the topic is designed to test.
One festival, worked in full
FESTIVAL: عيدُ الفِطْر — Eid al-Fitr. WHAT HAPPENS: نُصَلّي صَلاةَ العيدِ في الصَّباحِ الباكِر — we pray the Eid prayer early in the morning. MEANING: هَذا يُذَكِّرُنا بِنِهايَةِ شَهْرِ الصِّيام — this reminds us of the end of the month of fasting. COMPARISON: يَخْتَلِفُ هَذا عَنِ الاِحْتِفالاتِ في بَعْضِ الثَّقافاتِ الأُخْرى — this differs from celebrations in some other cultures. Name, describe, explain, compare — four moves for a full answer.
Building your own festival answer
For any "describe a festival or custom" prompt, take four steps. Name the festival or custom. Describe one thing that happens. Explain what it means or why it matters, with لِأَنَّ. Compare it briefly with somewhere or someone else. Four steps carry a single festival name into a complete GCSE-level answer.
